About me

My background

My name is Carlene and I was born and raised in Scotland. I studied my first degree in Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh, before completing a Masters in Forensic Psychology and Criminology.

After working for a number of years, I returned to my studies to complete a Masters of Public Health where I concentrated on sexual assault, consent and the use of alcohol.

I started my PhD, part-time, in 2022 with Glasgow Caledonian University and choose this specific topic due to the lack of current research and focus on it in Scotland.

Why did I chose this topic to study?

Sexual violence is a deeply significant and pervasive issue that, I believe, is often marginalized or overlooked in everyday conversations and research.

I think that it is crucial that we break this silence and confront the reality of women’s experiences. Such experiences have the power to fuel real impactful insights that could lead to policy change for better support systems for survivors in Scotland.

I believe that the current support systems available to survivors could be improved and by prioritizing Survivor-centered views, we can work towards a society that is more compassionate, informed, and equipped to provide the help that Survivors need.
